What is NLP?
Neuro = Neurology
Linguistic = Language (behavior is language)
Programming = Practice and Experience
NLP is the study and
practice of the effects of (conscious and unconscious) language patterns
on our neurology. Language is how we code and build our internal “maps” of
the external “territory.” These internal maps determine our experiences
because we operate not from the territory of objective reality but from
our own unique construction (map) of subjective reality. If our coding
(perceptual) strategies are less than accurate (which they all are), the
conclusions we draw about the world and our experiences in it must to some
degree be inaccurate and, thus, our responses are to some degree
ineffective and/or inappropriate.
The study and practice of NLP provides the methodologies for accurately
defining well formed outcomes and “cleaning up” our sensory channels in
order that we may more accurately re-present the “territory” within our
own neurology.
NLP teaches us to be “smarter” because as our internal re-presentations
become more accurate we free ourselves of our constricted beliefs about
how the world is and how people (should or do) operate thereby freeing
ourselves to be fully present to the realities and information available
to us in the moment.
NLP brings into consciousness how to know what is happening and gives us
more choices in our thinking and behavioral strategies for increased
flexibility in our thoughts, emotions, actions and interactions with
individuals and systems.
